CORAL BLOOM MASTERPLAN
Shurayrah Island, Red Sea, UAE
The Coral Bloom Resort on Shurayrah Island was designed by Foster+Partners as part of The Red Sea Project. The ring-shaped hotel is built on stilts as part of the “light touch” approach for minimal environmental impact. Several high-end luxury hotel units with a total of 2500 keys are placed along the ring, each offering an individual experience as part of an integrated design.
When working for Urban Systems Design as Environmental Consultants, our Founding Partners supported Foster+Partners in developing the sustainability concept for the masterplan. The development prioritises environmental sensitivity and nature preservation through regenerative design principles and circular economy strategies.
Mangrove plantation is key to restoring biodiversity, bioclimatic design strategies such as double roofs, adaptive external shading elements, adjustable canopies and spacing between buildings reduce energy demand up to 55%. To reduce construction time and waste generation, the elements will be prefabricated off-site.
