#EQXnews: Open-access Paper published
Bioclimatic and Regenerative Design Guidelines for a Circular University Campus in India
I am happy to announce, that my scientific paper got published in the #openaccess #MDPI #Sustainability Special Issue "Addressing Sustainability at Community Scale".
Let me give you a short #overview before you dive into reading it:
To #transform the negative impacts of buildings on the environment into a #positivefootprint, a radical #shift from the current, linear ‘make-use-dispose’ practice to a closed-loop ‘make-use-return’ system, associated with a #circulareconomy, is necessary.
This itself is no news, however, the #potential of #upscaling circular economy thinking on neighbourhood, community or city scales, is still underestimated by many industrial sectors.

Since at the same time #funding is often lacking to investigate such potentials, I saw an #opportunity in researching the #benefits of #bioclimatic and #regenerative #design implementation at #neighbourhoodscale when working as Environmental Consultant for #UrbanSystemsDesign on the KREA University Masterplan with #PLP Architecture.
At the same time, I was studying part-time the MSc Architecture and Environmental Design course at #UniversityofWestminster and had just found the perfect #masterthesis topic.
The research aims to demonstrate the possible shift to a #circularconstructionindustry by developing the first #practicalframework with tangible #benchmarks for a ‘Circular University Campus’ based on the KREA #UniversityCampus project in #India.
Based on extensive literature research, a #guideline for the ‘Circular University Campus’ was developed, and its #applicability tested on the #casestudy. Furthermore, the evolved principles were used to establish ‘Project Specific Circular Building Indicators’ for a student residential block and #enhance the proposed design through bioclimatic and regenerative design strategies. The #buildingperformance was evaluated through #computationalsimulations, #wholelifecarbonanalysis and the #circularbuildingassessment tool by #oneclicklca.
The results demonstrated the #benefits and #feasibility of bioclimatic, regenerative building and neighbourhood design and provided #practical #prototypical case study and #guidelines which can be adapted by #architects, #planners and #governmentalinstitutions to other projects, thereby enabling the #shift to a #restorative, #circular #constructionindustry.

A big #thankyou to my thesis supervisor and paper co-author Rosa Schiano-Phan from University of Westminster, my mentor and practical thesis supervisor Klaus Bode from Urban Systems Design as well as the team from PLP Architecture for this opportunity: Marta González Ruiz, Karl Sharro and Anil Tailor to mention a few.
